Learn to play American mahjong
Almost everyone who walks through our doors says some version of the same thing: "I want to learn, but it looks complicated." With so many tiles on the table and a card full of unfamiliar combinations, it can feel overwhelming at first. The good news is that you'll be surrounded by others who feel exactly the same way, so you are in like company. Pull up a chair and let's get started!
You might not master the game in your first session, and no one expects you to. But you will learn enough to sit at a real table and play a real hand. That's where the game begins to make sense, and where the fun truly starts.

How the three-session series works
Learn, practice, play
Learn
We begin with the rules, the lingo, and a step-by-step look at how a hand is played. No advance reading or preparation is required.
Practice
After frontloading you with the mahjong basics, you'll play a practice game with an instructor beside you, personally guiding you from the initial deal to a win.
Play
You'll then complete two additional guided-play sessions, giving you the practice and confidence to play independently. After that, you'll always have The Perch to land at as you continue developing your skills and enjoying the game.
Private Lessons
Learn at your own pace, with your own people.
Book a private three-session series just for you, or gather up to three friends and learn together. Choose the days and times that work best for you during studio hours.
Have 8 or more guests? We'd love to host your group as a private event.
Group class
Learn alongside others who are starting exactly where you are. Group classes move at a comfortable pace, feel more social, and are often even more fun. Come with friends or arrive on your own. Most people who do leave having made a new connection.
Keep practicing
Second guided-practice series
Two more guided-practice sessions after your learning series, for anyone who wants a little more time with an instructor nearby before playing on their own.

Then what?
The studio opens up to you. Join a Perch and Play session, become a member and play regularly, or take part in our Monday Lunch League. Lots of choices for whatever works best for you.
Keep coming back, and before long, a room full of strangers becomes a room full of familiar faces. That sense of community is what keeps so many of our regulars returning.
